Your Priorities are My Priorities
Attentive to the people's concerns, Jim has developed a platform built on the issues facing Louisiana's 1st Congressional District and beyond.
Healthcare should not be a privilege for the rich, but a right for all Americans. Every single American should have access to affordable, effective health care coverage. No one should be forced to take out a second mortgage because a loved one gets sick. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) is not perfect, but it has provided affordable coverage to more than 500,000 people in Louisiana who were previously uninsured. We need to protect these gains and build on them to help the millions of people whose plans remain insufficient.
INVESTING MORE INTO OUR FUTURE
Louisiana continuously ranks among the lowest states for Education in America. I believe that real change should begin in the classroom, with increased wages for our educators. Teachers are valuable members of society, and we as a nation do not properly acknowledge and embrace them for their commitment to our future. We should also recognize that vouchers for private schools only hurt our public education institutions, and offer no long term solutions. Public Education as a whole should be a major talking point in Washington, as our students are the future of our democracy. They deserve to be given the tools necessary to succeed.
UNIONS & WORKERS RIGHTS
| Endorsed By AFL-CIO |
I believe that all Louisiana workers deserve a living wage, and that no one working full time should have to struggle to make ends meet. We need to strengthen and protect our workforce, help small businesses grow, and bring good, well-paying jobs to the 1st District. As a Congressman, I will proudly support legislation to protect workers' freedom. I also support raising the federal minimum wage, as all American workers deserve to be properly compensated for their investment into our country's growth.
VETERANS & MILITARY FAMILIES
In Louisiana, we have four military bases, over 13,100 active military personnel, and an estimated 293,317 veterans. It is unacceptable that 6.9% of Louisiana’s veterans are unemployed and 8.7% live in poverty. We must honor and care for those that sacrificed to serve this country, including providing medical care, providing treatment for PTSD, offering tax bonuses for soldiers, supplying transitional services and assisting with career opportunities.
In addition to ensuring that our soldiers and veterans receive the medical care that they need, I also pledge to protect our soldiers by not sending them into unnecessary conflicts that have no clear outcome or end.
